J: July

Oh,  Beautiful April,  I must confess.  Yes, you are tender, fragrant and delicate.  You are fresh and new, you sweep winter darkness away and you welcome the sun with beautful bouquets.  But, I must tell you, you have a sister - a gorgeous sister - who can command the world when she is in town.  July is BOLD.  She is HOT.  She invites leisure and laughter.

July is brassy and knows few boundaries.  Her voice is loud and filled with laughter and adventure.  She is wide open, very spontaneous, very warm and the most relaxed sister of all.  She loves her flip flops and her polished toes, her sunscreen fragrance and kisses in the evening breeze on the back porch. July is up for a bike ride at any time of the day or evening.  She embraces the outdoors and naps in the hammock.  July has favorite colors:  the brightest ones in the box.  She flies kites at the beach and she lives on watermelon, fresh tomatoes, crisp corn, and crunchy green beans.

July and I?  We were meant for each other.   I do love it when she is in town!

  1. School was still a distant worry in July. Anyone for a game of Monopoly? We finished the 1,500 piece jigsaw puzzle, and the pinochle tournament is tonight, so there's time. But first, a dip in the pool, or at least a run through the sprinklers. Is that Vin Scully and Jerry Doggett in the background, with the ball game? Koufax versus Marichal. July.

    1. Oh, I don't hate you at all! I love April too and I get why she might be your favorite child. We don't get a lot of summer heat - maybe less than 5 over 90 degree days in the season. We are majorly impacted by the marine layer. Fog doesn't burn off typically until late morning, a breezy, high 70's mid day, with the fog rolling back in for a chilly evening. Maybe you would like that kind of July?

  4. July is an excellent companion for VACATION...but when it is a normal reality that involves working or other chores, sigh...not so much. Though the advent of central air conditioning, and air conditioned vehicles, does allow me to enjoy her a bit more than I did in my childhood.

    1. You are right. For all of my life, July has been time of freedom. Going to school and then working in the schools, I have never had to deal with July as a normal work month. Sure, I went to and/or taught summer school but that is not the same as the rest of the year. I suspect that is a big part of its attraction for me.

  7. Love the images, both visual and written. July and I have an up and down relationship--it contains birthday and anniversaries of some people I really love (including my own birthday and wedding anniversary), but it is also the month in which three people very close to me died (in 1986, 1994, and 2006) as well as the month several other not-so-great things have happened to myself and other family members. Frankly, I'm a little scared of July at this point in my life. :) But she sure is pretty most of the time.

    1. Yikes - I can understand your anxiety around July. She sure is a mixed bag. I wish I had a July birthday..... You remind me of October. That is the month of which I am scared. I do not like the fall and that opinion was painfully made solid when my father died unexpectedly on Oct 16. Bad month..... except for the fact that it also contains my mother's birthday, my parents' anniversary and the birthdays of two of my brothers....
