Taking the Tough Out

Ever the thinker, I have decided to think about how I can make some things better.  For instance, I work hard during the day and when I get home around 5:00, I find ways to take the tough out of the day.  I want to explore alternative ways of taking the tough out of the day.  Without getting into details and possibly creating a bias among my readers, I am curious about what other people do to take the tough out of the day.

What are your strategies for winding up hard work?  How do you go from the issues of whatever your current work in life may be to a place of relaxation, contentment, ease.  I'm not saying you have to be flying high.  I'm just wondering what other people do to feel well at night.

     All strategies are welcome.

  1. Oooh, good question! I will be interested to see what others have to say. As for me, I've just been so lazy lately! I don't like it, but I get home and I'm so tired. I sit down, and BOOM! That's it. I don't want to get up again! So, I am in need of getting the lazy out and the active in! (I'm sure my husband would appreciate that too! hahaha)

    1. I know what mean - I get home and I am fried. My neck is killing me, my head is spinning, shouting at me to stop, I can't stop the pace of the day.

    1. I named your town, so deleted :)
      These work for me:
      1. Take the long way home, listening to audiobooks
      2. Putter in the yard, water the plants
      3. Take a nap ( always works! )
      4. W used to pick a billboard and leave his work baggage there on the way home. It was always ready for him to pick up the next day. Conversely, home thoughts were exchanged at the same place.
      5. I knit. That calms my mind and makes me focus on counting stitches instead of counting troubles.
Mind you, I still do non-productive avoidances, which usually make me feel worse...

    2. No problem!
I sometimes take the long way home from work via my bike - instead of riding just the three short blocks, I will take a cruise over to Ragle and enjoy the trees!
I do take a nap sometimes but it always feels like I wasted my time then... sometimes I take Ellie on a walk downtown -
After dinner seems to be the hardest time. I don't really want to watch television - it's complicated.

  3. I take the bowsers for a walk up to Bell Springs Road, a round trip of thirteen-twenty minutes, depending on the mood of said bowsers. Works wonders because of the fifteen degree incline at the top. Gets the blood circulating.

    1. Walks are good, I know - I "should" do that. I meant to do that today but when I got home I was so irritable and grouchy and I felt like there was too much to do here - so that didn't happen. I did take care of a couple of shores and then went in to read for awhile....ended up falling asleep for about 30 minutes. At least that calmed me down.

  4. Sometimes I take time to be alone, with even the dogs shut out of my room, and just breath in peace. Sometimes I walk with my husband. Sometimes I think that I'm cranky because I haven't crossed anything off my to do list, so I tackle a project that is mine alone, done my way, and that actually helps!

    1. Agreed! Sometimes doing something constructive is a way out of malaise. I do like being productive!

  5. Oh, sweet lord, if I had the answer to this question...

I'm more than willing to test-drive some of the strategies put forth by your brilliant commenters, though. :)

  6. Oh , yes, let's implore the gods! Last night my sweet daughter came over and she made cookies while I sat at the kitchen island and we played around on Pinterest. Really???? Yes, but it was fun. Go figure.
